Kennel Training a Puppy at Night: Step-by-Step Guide

Nighttime can be one of the trickiest parts of kennel training for puppies. When the sun goes down, the whines often ramp up, and your patience gets put to the test. But with a consistent routine and some thoughtful prep, bedtime doesn’t have to be a battleground. Whether you're training at home or preparing your pup for an overnight stay, a calm, structured approach makes all the difference.

Step 1: Make the Crate a Positive Place

Start by creating positive associations with the kennel. Use treats, toys, and gentle encouragement to help your puppy see it as a safe, cozy den rather than a punishment zone. Keep the door open at first so your pup can explore freely.

Step 2: Establish a Wind-Down Routine

Dogs thrive on routine. Dim the lights, lower the volume, and keep evening play sessions calm. A predictable pattern—potty, cuddle, crate—helps signal to your pup that it's time to rest.

Step 3: Stay Close (But Not Too Close)

In the early days, it’s okay to keep the crate in your bedroom so your puppy feels secure. Gradually, you can move it farther away if you plan to kennel them in a separate space long term.

Step 4: Handle Whining with Care

If your puppy whines, resist the urge to spring into action. Make sure they’re not signaling a bathroom emergency, but otherwise, let them self-soothe. Reacting too quickly can reinforce the noise.
